Matt Hanewald is our second artist-in-residence who will be visiting us August 11-18th. Matt is a woodworker who specializes in the making of handmade furniture. He moved to Walhalla from Bellingham, Washington in 1994. In addition to making furniture, he is also in part-owner in Southeastern Trees LLC which specializes in the revegetation and environmental restoration of streams and wetlands. Over the past decade he has planted over two million trees on sites from Memphis, TN to Tarboro, NC to Pensacola, FL. With that, he comes full circle, as trees are the resources that enable him to pursue his craft.

2002-2003, Matt and his father built a timber frame shop from trees cut and milled on his property. His father began teaching Matt the craft of building Windsor chairs, replicas of chairs originally built in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. Matt has since taken what he has learned from both his father, and Joe Graham a chairmaker in Ohio, to create his own furniture that ranges from traditional to modern. He has his own sawmill and most of the wood that he uses in his work is processed and dried on site. Many of the Windsor chair parts are hand split right out of the log to provide straight grain for steam bending and strength. Some chair parts are turned on a lathe, but most are hand carved with a drawknife and spokeshave, with each chair hand made one at a time. Matt also makes other pieces of furniture, along with beautiful handmade canoes and kayaks. During Matt’s stay, he will offer a workshop for interested participants. Those taking the class will be able to take a finished project by the end of the week. Matt will also demonstrate the making of a chair from start to finish in the village. A reception to welcome Matt to The Reserve will be held on Sunday, August 12th.

JHON AKERS & MARTHA BEAUDROT, 2011 ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE

For the first time, The Community Foundation “shared” an artist-in-residency with two artists. Classical Guitarist Jhon Akers visited The Reserve at Lake Keowee in August 2011. During his visit he taught an ancient form of tai-chi in the mornings, performed at Founders Hall, and hosted a trip to the Carl Sandburg home in Flat Rock, NC.

Accomplished Pianist Martha Beaudrot visited The Reserve in October of 2011. During her stay Martha hosted a concert in Founders Hall with her award-winning protege Ethan Flowe who began studying with Martha at age 14.

JOHN SMITH, 2010 ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE

In 2010, landscape photographer John Smith held three workshops at The Reserve to share his passion and knowledge of photography with our members and the local community. “I feel that I have a unique ability to see light,” Smith answers when asked about the distinction of his work. “My passion comes from a love of light and how it reflects and complements the scene." John presented a piece of photography to the Community Foundation as a “thank you” for the opportunity to be part of the residency program.

JEFFERY CALLAHAN, 2009 ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE.

Jeffery is a story-teller, and his paintings bring to life the colorful experience of growing up in the South. As part of his residency, Jeffery took paints, patience, and a big smile to Clemson Elementary to do an arts project with special needs children. Jeffery also presented an original acrylic painting to the Foundation representing his stay in The Reserve.

MARK HORTON, 2008 ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE.

Landscape painter Mark Horton was the inaugural Artist-in-Residence at The Reserve at Lake Keowee. While here, Horton lived at The Reserve, painted on site, interacted with residents and attended a reception in his honor. The artist also visited Daniel High School in nearby Clemson where he spoke to art students, gave them a lesson and critiqued their work.

“It was an unbelievable week,” said Horton. “I was just blown away by how beautiful the community is. The whole area is so unspoiled and authentic. One of the great things for me was the light. You have the mountain vistas, but because you are in the foothills, you get gorgeous light that isn’t blocked by the mountains. And the mornings down by the lake are beautiful. I love painting atmosphere and it’s very dramatic here.”
