A clear focus on environmental
stewardship for Lake Keowee.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION GREEN INITIATIVES

Lake Keowee is an exceptional, blue-water lake, 23 miles in length and over 3 miles at its widest point. With over 300 miles of shoreline and depths ranging to over 150 feet deep, the lake is supplied with water from Lake Jocassee and the Sumter National Forest watershed. It was created by Duke Energy as part of the Keowee-Toxaway Project to support its Oconee Station electric power generation. The lake also serves as a source of drinking water for Greenville and Seneca. As property owners and stakeholders in this area, we are aware of how important taking care of this resource is for all, both now and future generations.

LAKE KEOWEE SWEEP

FOLKS (Friends of Lake Keowee) has spearheaded a lake sweep for many years to help keep Keowee and its shorelines clean, and to help maintain the clarity and purity of the lake.  As part of our commitment to Lake Keowee, The Reserve at Lake Keowee has participated in the bi-annual Lake Sweep for many years. In the past 2 years, we have had a small handful of property owners aid staff in the spring and fall sweeps. This year, we seek to increase the number of volunteers to this effort. The spring sweep will take place the week of April 17th – April 24th, and we need your help! Each family that volunteers will be asked to clean a section of the lake that is part of the Reserve shoreline.

ADOPT AN ISLAND

Duke Energy and FOLKS have begun a new program – “adopt an island”. The Reserve has committed to being an island keeper for islands 17 – 17e. It is our hope that some of you will individually participate and help become an "island keeper". If you are interested, please let me know. The requirement is to clean the islands four times a year, with two of the times being during the bi-annual lake sweeps. In addition, all island keepers’ names will be on a sign on their island for recognition. Join us in adopting an island!

ADOPT A HIGHWAY

Continuing with making an impact around the Reserve, The Reserve Community Foundation is adopting a portion of Highway 133, which borders with The Reserve. Part of this commitment is to clean the section four times a year. We need your help to make these efforts successful. The first sweep of the highway takes place February 18th-20th. We will be scheduling 3 more cleanups during the remainder of 2010.

If you would like more information or can help with either the lake sweeps or adopt a highway cleanup days, please contact me at kgravely@reservekeowee.com. I will add you to the volunteer list and let you know the year’s schedule for all the events. Remember, what can be overwhelming for a few, is a lot easier with many hands. Help us champion this wonderful area and keep it beautiful for future generations!
